Serious about the small stuff
The multi-layer dial showcases several technical innovations, the most striking of which is a 1mm sapphire disc featuring a distinctive, liquid-like surface. This effect is achieved through advanced 5-axis CNC machining, followed by meticulous semi-polishing to create the desired finish. Each CNC machine produces only 6–8 discs per day, with a yield rate of approximately 50–60%. During the surface-finishing stage, a single polishing unit can process around 20 pieces per seven-hour batch, also with a yield rate of about 50–60%.
Beneath the sapphire layer lies the base dial, which incorporates seven carefully applied layers of custom-formulated Super-LumiNova pigment. Each layer must be allowed to dry fully before the next is added, making the process exceptionally time-consuming but essential for achieving a vivid and uniform glow.
In daylight, the printing details appear to float, casting a shadow on the lower base dial. As the watch moves around in relation to the light source, the shadows move accordingly, resulting in a dynamic and ever-changing appearance. In darkness, the printing details are backlit by the bright Super-LumiNova base dial and appear to be totally disconnected from any surface.
A movement that is as reliable as your favourite bartender: the SW210-1 by Sellita is a Manual Winding Swiss Calibre that boasts a 42-hour power reserve and is accurate to -7/+7 seconds per day.
The Fears Watch Company Limited, known as “Fears”, is a British luxury watch company, with heritage. Fears is one of Britain’s oldest family-run watch companies, first established in 1846 by Edwin Fear in Bristol. The business ran for 130 years until it closed in 1976. In 2016, the year the business would have celebrated its 170th anniversary, it was re-established by Edwin Fear’s great-great-great-grandson, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill. Fears today is located in its historical home city of Bristol, where the watches are designed, before being hand built in Britain.
